Sweet Henry has an incredible story! One day I received an email about a long haired Dachshund in a nearby shelter that was going to be euthanized at 5pm that afternoon. It was 1pm. I called the shelter to put him on hold and got on the road to get him. I arrived two hours later and the dog they brought out was not a Dachshund but there was no way I could leave him at the shelter knowing that it would mean certain death for him. Henry’s fur was matted in his own waste and his nails were so long that they curved under his paw and prevented his pads from touching the ground and he was walking on the backs of his legs. His eyes had build-up from tears and never being wiped clean. I had to carry him to my car. When we arrived home I immediately bathed him and cut all the matted hair from his coat. He drank water for 10 minutes. He had been in his kennel at the shelter with no water because he was scheduled to be put to sleep. All that night I carried him outside to potty whenever he woke up. The next day he went to vet first thing in the morning and had his nails clipped and a wellness exam. Henry has a small heart murmur that he has probably had since birth but does not affect him in anyway. The shelter staff thought that Henry had cataracts but after his eyes were cleaned we could see that they were a beautiful clear brown. Henry cannot hear but he knows to look at the faces of his human companions for direction. Henry is a quiet and affectionate soul. He has arthritis in his legs but still likes to go on walks and gets very excited about wearing a collar and leash. Henry sleeps well through the night and must be woken gently so that he isn’t startled awake. He is very quiet except when his people are having Chinese food. He loves the smell of it and will sit beside our chairs and bark. Henry needs to go to a quiet home that will shower him with the love he deserves. Stairs are hard for him so he will need to carried if there are any stairs in his new home. He is an exceptional companion and a great snuggler. If your dachshund of choice is coming from a state other than the one you reside in, there will be an additional $40.00 Health Certificate Fee that is required by law.
